AI-generated image suggesting improper conduct between Kosovo parliament members
A synthetic image generated by AI was posted on Facebook in Kosovo suggesting improper conduct between two parliament members during the campaign period for snap elections. The image was verified as AI-generated and the affected politician provided the genuine photograph to fact-checkers.
What happened
On 30 April 2026, a Facebook page called 'Specbuk' published an image showing Kosovo parliament members Besnik Tahiri and Duda Balje together with the caption 'Besnik Tahiri takes a selfie with Duda Balaj in parliament premises.'
Kallxo's fact-checking project Krypometer tested the image using WasitAi, a platform for detecting AI-generated images, which indicated a high probability that the image was artificially generated.
Besnik Tahiri stated the image was manipulated and provided the genuine photograph to Krypometer, which differed visibly from the fabricated version. Tahiri said the post was 'fake news' intended to damage his political reputation.
Reported impact
The fabricated image was published on the same day Kosovo's acting President announced snap elections scheduled for 7 June 2026, during an election campaign period.
