AI-generated videos depicted Kosovo election candidates in fabricated scenarios
AI-generated videos depicting Kosovo parliamentary candidates in fabricated campaign scenarios, including scenes of feeding and dining together, circulated on Facebook during the run-up to early elections. Fact-checkers confirmed the videos were created using Meta AI and detected visible markers of artificial generation.
What happened
Starting from the announcement of early parliamentary elections in Kosovo, videos generated with artificial intelligence circulated on social media depicting figures from competing political parties. On 14 May 2026, a Facebook account published a video purporting to show Albin Kurti, the LΓ«vizja VetΓ«vendosje candidate for prime minister, feeding party members with cake. The video contained a 'MetaAI' logo indicating it was generated with artificial intelligence.
Additional AI-generated videos circulated on Facebook showing various figures from Kosovo political parties consuming food together. Another video depicted Vjosa Osmani, the Democratic League of Kosovo list-bearer, and Lumir Abdixhiku, the party's prime ministerial candidate, in a beauty salon. Fact-checking detected that these videos were generated with artificial intelligence.
Reported impact
The fabricated videos were published on Facebook during a pre-election period in Kosovo, where they circulated among voters. An original video of Albin Kurti published on 24 March 2026 showed different content than the AI-generated version.
Index analysis
The AI-generated videos contained visible markers of synthetic media, including a MetaAI logo. Fact-checkers tested the videos using platforms designed to detect AI-generated content and confirmed they were artificially created.
