Two arrested for AI-assisted cheating in University of Hyderabad recruitment exam
Two candidates were arrested after attempting to cheat in a University of Hyderabad recruitment exam using concealed scanners and AI-generated answers transmitted via Bluetooth devices. The scheme was discovered when a Bluetooth device beeped during the examination, leading to police investigation and arrest.
What happened
Two candidates, Anil (30) and Satish (31), both from Haryana, were arrested by Gachibowli police after attempting to cheat in a non-teaching Junior Office Assistant recruitment exam at the University of Hyderabad on 24 December 2025. The candidates concealed miniature scanners inside shirt buttons to scan question papers and used AI tools to generate answers, which were transmitted to them via hidden Bluetooth devices.
The malpractice was discovered when an invigilator heard a repeated beep from one candidate's concealed Bluetooth device during the exam. Upon frisking Anil, a Bluetooth device was found, and a scanner was discovered on his shirt button. A second candidate, Satish, was also found to be carrying a scanner.
Reported impact
The scheme disrupted the integrity of the university's recruitment examination for the non-teaching staff position. The discovery prevented the fraudulent candidates from obtaining positions through dishonest means.
Index analysis
The incident demonstrates the use of AI technology to facilitate examination fraud by automating the generation of answers from scanned questions. The combination of concealed hardware (button scanners and Bluetooth earpieces) with AI-generated content represents a coordinated attempt to evade exam invigilation.
Governance controls
The University of Hyderabad's invigilation procedures detected the malpractice through auditory detection of the Bluetooth device, triggering physical inspection. University authorities filed a formal complaint with the Gachibowli police, resulting in the registration of a case and arrest of the accused.
