AI-Generated Impersonations of Pastors Used in Donation and Influence Scams
AI-generated deepfake videos and synthetic voices have been used to impersonate Catholic priest Father Mike Schmitz and other pastors in scams targeting their congregations for donations and cryptocurrency investments. Multiple religious leaders in the United States and Philippines reported these impersonation campaigns on social media platforms.
What happened
AI-generated deepfake videos impersonating Catholic priest and podcaster Father Mike Schmitz were used to scam his congregation. The fake videos featured synthetic versions of Schmitz urging viewers to click links for blessings or prayer spots, with false urgency and hourglass graphics.
Pastors in Birmingham, Alabama; Freeport, New York; and Fort Lauderdale, Florida warned their followers about AI impersonation scams in various forms including direct messages, calls, and deepfakes. A pastor in the Ozarks had his Facebook account hacked with AI-generated cryptocurrency trading certificates posted under his name, and a megachurch in the Philippines reported deepfake videos of its pastors.
Reported impact
Father Schmitz addressed his congregation of over 1.2 million YouTube subscribers in November to warn them that AI-generated impersonations were difficult to distinguish from authentic videos, stating 'people can't necessarily tell. That's a problem. That's, like, a really big problem.'
Index analysis
According to cybersecurity expert Rachel Tobac, CEO of SocialProof Security, pastors have become extremely popular subjects of AI scams and deceptive media because they frequently appear on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels in visible settings such as pulpits or stages speaking to congregations.
