What happened
The Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) reported that it had become the target of a disinformation campaign allegedly controlled from Russia, known as 'Matrjoschka'. A dataset encompassing 338 posts since 24 July contained AI-generated fake videos that misused the MDR logo and fabricated serious criminal allegations against regional and local politicians in Saxony-Anhalt.
The campaign also misused logos of ARD-aktuell/tagesschau and Der Spiegel to appear credible. MDR stated that many posts were created using artificial intelligence and targeted public opinion formation ahead of the Saxony-Anhalt state election on 6 September 2026.
Reported impact
MDR Chefredakteurin Christin Bohmann stated that the falsification of journalistic brands and the spread of disinformation are attacks on the credibility of free media. Users could find it difficult to distinguish such forgeries from genuine news.
