What happened

A 16-year-old Class 10 student was confronted by school teachers and the principal after her mobile phone was allegedly found being used to access AI tools during a pre-board examination on December 22 in Greater Noida West, Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred on December 23.

According to the student's father, the girl had unknowingly brought her phone to the exam hall, where an invigilator caught her with it, reprimanded her, and informed her class teacher. The student was then taken to the principal, where the father alleged that teachers and the principal continued to scold and insult her harshly, calling him careless and displaying aggressive behaviour.

Reported impact

The student's father alleged that the severe emotional distress from being humiliated by teachers and school authorities caused his daughter psychological harm. He claims the incident also left his other two daughters traumatised and afraid to return to school.

The student reportedly died after the incident. The father filed a complaint accusing the principal and teachers of mental harassment and abetment.

Index analysis

The school denied that the student was harassed, stating it followed standard Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) protocols and that the interaction was brief and non-abusive. The principal stated that the student did not cry or show signs of distress during the incident and that the school has CCTV footage of the entire interaction.

Governance controls

The school said it followed examination protocols prescribed by the Central Board of Secondary Education when addressing the suspected use of AI tools during the exam. The school confiscated the phone and reprimanded the student in line with CBSE examination rules.
