SPP warns of fraudulent investment scam using AI deepfake videos
SPP, a Slovak utility company, warned the public on 26 February 2025 of a massive fraudulent campaign on social networks using AI-generated deepfake videos to impersonate company executives and celebrities in fake investment schemes. The scam aimed to extract sensitive personal and financial data from victims.
What happened
In recent days, SPP detected a massive fraudulent campaign on social networks offering investment in its shares. The campaign used fraudulent profiles, a fake website, advertisements and deepfake videos created with artificial intelligence featuring known personalities or members of SPP's management, as well as similar voices of politicians, actors and moderators.
The fraud aimed to obtain sensitive data including name, address, email and banking information that could later be misused by scammers. SPP stated it is taking legal action to protect itself against the fraudulent practices.
Reported impact
The campaign exploited SPP's brand trustworthiness. SPP distanced itself from the fraudulent practices and called on the public to be cautious about similar advertisements and not respond to the offers.
Index analysis
The deepfake videos featured known personalities and members of SPP management, as well as similar voices of politicians, actors and moderators, to lend credibility to the fraudulent investment offers.
Governance controls
