Spain Police warn of AI-driven phishing scam targeting email accounts
Spain's national police warned of a sophisticated phishing scam combining AI-generated voice calls with fraudulent emails. Scammers reportedly use AI voice synthesis to impersonate real people, claiming victims' email accounts have been compromised, then send malicious links to steal credentials.
What happened
The Policía Nacional shared an alert on social media about a phishing scam that combines artificial intelligence and phishing to steal email accounts.
The scam begins with a phone call in which, thanks to AI, the voice sounds like a real person. The caller informs the victim their email account has been compromised and offers help. Subsequently, a fraudulent email is sent with a link that redirects to fake pages designed to trick the victim into modifying account security settings or changing passwords.
Governance controls
The Policía Nacional offered three key recommendations: email providers never call to warn users about anything; pay close attention to the sender's address; and access official portals manually, never through links.
