Smart glasses used for exam cheating at South China Agricultural University

Students at South China Agricultural University used AI-enabled smart glasses with embedded cameras to cheat on final exams by photographing questions and displaying AI-generated answers on the lens. The university detected the incidents, invalidated the cheaters' scores, and implemented enhanced security measures including metal detectors and AI proctoring systems.

What happened

During recent final exams at South China Agricultural University, multiple students were discovered using AI smart glasses to cheat. The glasses contained embedded micro cameras that photographed exam questions, transmitted them for AI analysis, and displayed answers on the lens as a teleprompter, with capacity to pre-load tens of thousands of characters for offline reference.

The university issued a notice on 1 July stating that any student bringing smart glasses or devices with communication, storage and photography functions into the exam would be deemed to have cheated, regardless of whether the device was turned on or consulted.

Reported impact

Students caught cheating had their exam scores recorded as zero. They faced disciplinary action including demerit marks or above, with violations permanently recorded in their personal files.

Index analysis

The AI smart glasses were designed to be highly concealed, with unusual-looking black frames that raised suspicions among invigilators during English exams.

Governance controls

The university upgraded exam security procedures, including the use of metal detectors to scan students' heads, ears and glasses, with particular attention to black-framed glasses. An 'AI intelligent proctoring' system was activated to monitor exam venues in real time for abnormal behavior.
