Scammers Use AI-Generated Images to Target Missing Dog Owner in Florida
Scammers used AI-generated images of a family's missing dog to attempt extortion, claiming it had been injured and needed emergency surgery costing $2,800. The family detected the fraud through image inconsistencies and recovered their pet with help from a neighbor who located the person who had taken it.
What happened
A Florida family's Beagle mix, Archer, escaped from the backyard in Deltona on Saturday night. The family posted a photo of the dog on Facebook seeking help from the community.
By Sunday morning, the family received a call claiming Archer had been hit by a car and needed emergency surgery costing nearly $2,800. The caller sent images appearing to show the dog on an operating table with X-rays.
The family identified the images as AI-generated after noticing irregularities in the dog's fur and an X-ray dated 2022, as well as a veterinary clinic address that was actually Deltona City Hall.
A neighbor told the family he had seen a woman pick up Archer on the night he disappeared and helped track her down. Archer was returned home safe Thursday morning.
Reported impact
The scammers attempted to obtain nearly $2,800 from the family through the fraudulent emergency veterinary claim.
Archer was reported to be 'physically, emotionally, mentally just worn out' after his ordeal.
Index analysis
This scam is believed to be part of a growing trend in which criminals monitor social media, especially 'lost pet' posts, to find vulnerable owners and exploit their distress.
