Research Shows ChatGPT-4o Voice API Can Execute Financial Scams
Academic researchers demonstrated that ChatGPT's voice API can be manipulated to execute financial scams including credential theft and money transfers, with success rates between 20 and 60 percent and execution costs under $1. OpenAI acknowledged the research and stated it is improving the system's safeguards against misuse.
What happened
Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign published a paper showing that ChatGPT's real-time voice API powered by GPT-4o can be manipulated to execute financial scams.
The researchers simulated scams by interacting with the voice agent, testing bank transfers, cryptocurrency transfers, gift card scams, and credential theft from Gmail and Instagram. Success rates ranged from 20 to 60 percent, with Gmail credential theft succeeding 60 percent of the time and Instagram 40 percent of the time.
Reported impact
The scams could impersonate real people and lure victims to transfer money using real websites such as Bank of America. The cost of executing these scams averaged $0.75, or approximately Rs 63, with bank transfer scams costing $2.51.
Index analysis
The researchers noted that ChatGPT currently lacks sufficient safeguards to prevent misuse by fraudsters and cybercriminals. OpenAI stated it is 'constantly making ChatGPT better at stopping deliberate attempts to trick it' and that research papers like this one help improve ChatGPT's defenses.
