Police officer used AI voice cloning in triple homicide case
A military police officer in Brazil allegedly used AI voice cloning to create a synthetic audio imitating his ex-wife's voice to deceive her parents, as part of an investigation into the disappearance and suspected murder of three family members. The officer has been indicted on charges of feminicide and double homicide, with six people in total indicted for various roles in the crime and cover-up.
What happened
Cristiano Domingues Francisco, a military police officer, is the principal suspect in the disappearance of Silvana Germann de Aguiar, 48, and her parents Dalmira Germann de Aguiar, 70, and Isail Vieira de Aguiar, 69, all missing since late January 2026 in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, Brazil. According to the Polícia Civil, Cristiano used AI-generated audio that imitated Silvana's voice to deceive her parents, telling them she had suffered an accident in Gramado on 25 January, when in fact her mobile phone and Cristiano's were located in Gravataí.
Police investigation revealed that Silvana was last seen arriving home on the night of 24 January; a red VW Fox entered her residence and a mobile phone linked to Cristiano connected to her home Wi-Fi briefly before departing. After learning of the supposed accident, Silvana's parents left their home to search for her and have not been seen since. The bodies of all three victims remain unfound.
Reported impact
The AI-generated voice cloning deceived Silvana's parents into believing she had suffered an accident, diverting their attention away from investigating the actual crime. The use of the synthesized audio facilitated the concealment of the crimes against all three family members.
Index analysis
The police investigation indicates that the voice cloning was used as part of a deliberate scheme to manipulate family members and obstruct the investigation into the disappearances. The AI system was weaponized to create a false narrative about Silvana's whereabouts.
Governance controls
Cristiano was indicted on charges of feminicide, double homicide, concealment of a corpse, falsity of documents, theft, criminal association, and abandonment of an incapable person. Six people in total were indicted, including his current wife, his brother, his mother, his current mother-in-law, and an acquaintance for roles including data manipulation, obstruction of justice, and evidence tampering.
