Microsoft-backed New Jersey data center operates unpermitted generators
A Microsoft-backed AI data center in Vineland, New Jersey allegedly operated at least 45 unpermitted gas-powered generators, according to thermal drone footage and a confirmed inspection by state environmental authorities. The generators, located near two schools, reportedly emit air pollution linked to respiratory and cardiovascular harm. Former EPA officials stated the facility violates federal law and regulatory authorities have opened an investigation.
What happened
Thermal drone footage captured by Floodlight in late August 2026 showed the DataOne facility in Vineland, New Jersey operating at least 45 of its 62 generators without permits.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection confirmed it has issued no permits for power generators at the facility and noticed them during a site inspection on 29 July.
Reported impact
The tractor-trailer-sized gas-powered generators emit substantial amounts of health-harming air pollution linked to asthma, heart attacks and premature death.
The facility is located approximately one mile from two schools.
Index analysis
Federal and state law requires a final permit before generators are brought on site and before operation, according to former EPA air enforcement chief Bruce Buckheit, who stated DataOne's activities 'violate federal law'.
Governance controls
Buckheit stated DataOne should immediately stop operating the generators and pay a fine for 'their illegal emissions'.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection said the agency had not yet made 'a full compliance determination' as of the time of reporting.
