Man Uses Generative AI to Forge Disabled Parking Permit in Osaka
A 53-year-old man in Osaka was formally referred to prosecutors for using generative AI to forge a disabled parking permit to avoid parking fees. The forged permit was reportedly difficult to distinguish from the genuine document, and he admitted to the forgery when questioned by police.
What happened
A 53-year-old company employee from Takashi, Osaka used generative AI to edit data of a disabled parking permit, officially called a 'no-parking exemption designated vehicle marker' (้ง่ป็ฆๆญข้คๅคๆๅฎ่ปๆจ็ซ ), which he obtained through an online search. He created a forged permit in April or May 2026.
On June 3, 2026, the man placed the forged permit on the dashboard of his private vehicle parked on a street in Oyodo, Osaka in a no-parking zone. Police responded to a tip-off about the illegally parked vehicle, and when questioned, the man admitted to the forgery.
Reported impact
The forged permit was described as appearing sufficiently authentic that it was difficult to distinguish from a genuine one based on appearance alone.
