Indonesia: Satgas PASTI warns of AI-driven voice cloning and deepfake fraud
Indonesia's financial crime task force Satgas PASTI warned in November 2025 that scammers are increasingly using AI-generated voice clones and deepfake videos to impersonate known individuals and defraud victims. The task force reported that such schemes are widespread and causing financial losses, and issued prevention guidance recommending verification of requests through alternate channels and caution toward unusual audio or video content.
What happened
Satuan Tugas Pemberantasan Aktivitas Keuangan Ilegal (Satgas PASTI) warned the public in November 2025 about fraudulent schemes using AI technology to create voice clones and deepfake videos.
According to Satgas PASTI, scammers use AI to record and mimic the voices of known individuals such as friends, colleagues, or family members, then use these cloned voices to conduct conversations impersonating those people. Scammers also create fake videos that accurately mimic a person's face and expressions to convince victims they are communicating with someone they know.
Reported impact
Satgas PASTI stated that AI-driven fraud using voice cloning and deepfakes has become widespread and is causing financial losses to the public.
Governance controls
Satgas PASTI recommended three prevention measures: verifying information through alternative communication channels before responding to unusual requests for money or personal information; protecting personal and financial information by not disclosing it to unverified persons; and being cautious of unusual-sounding or unusual-looking videos or audio, even if they appear to come from known individuals.
