Hong Kong deepfake romance scam ring arrested for HK$34 million fraud
Hong Kong police arrested 31 people for running a deepfake-based romance scam that defrauded victims in Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia of over HK$34 million. The syndicate used AI face-swapping technology to create fake profiles on dating apps and lured victims into fraudulent cryptocurrency investments.
What happened
Police in Hong Kong dismantled a criminal syndicate that exploited deepfake technology and dating apps to defraud victims in Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia of over HK$34 million. The group operated from two rented locations in Kowloon Bay and recruited youngsters, including university students, to target victims through online dating platforms.
The syndicate used face-swapping technology to create convincing deepfake profiles of attractive individuals. Recruits were trained to craft false personas as wealthy investors and lure victims into online romantic relationships. Once trust was established, scammers persuaded victims to invest in fraudulent cryptocurrency platforms, promising profits that never materialized.
Reported impact
Victims attempted to withdraw their supposed investments but were met with demands for taxes or penalty fees instead. The scam targeted victims primarily from Taiwan and Singapore, with operations also reaching Malaysia.
