What happened

German voice actors are boycotting Netflix over contract clauses that require them to provide dubbing recordings for AI training without compensation. The Assignment of Rights Agreement (AOR) proposed by Netflix stipulates that voice actor recordings be used for AI training purposes without payment, though a separate agreement negotiated by the actors' union BFFS in summer 2025 provides compensation only if the trained AI is actually deployed.

Voice actors Sascha Rotermund and Anne Helm, who dubbed characters Omar Sy and Ludivine Sagnier in German for the series 'Lupin', refused to sign the AOR agreement. Their replacements were used for season 4. Similarly, voice actors Peter Flechtner and Carlotta Pahl were replaced for the animated series 'Stranger Things: Tales From '85'.

Reported impact

German voice actors fear that AI training on their voices will threaten their long-term employment prospects and existential viability as a profession. The Verband Deutscher Sprecher:innen (VDS) voice actors' union commissioned a legal opinion concluding that the Netflix contracts endanger the existence of synchronization speakers and contain potentially illegal provisions regarding copyright, privacy rights, data protection, and contract law.

Index analysis

The VDS commissioned a legal opinion from Spirit Legal arguing that central clauses in Netflix's contracts are invalid or unlawful, and that an opaque and ineffective general clause from the BFFS agreement also appears in the AOR agreement. In response, the BFFS actors' union commissioned a counter-opinion from Professor Artur-Axel Wandtke, which concluded that the VDS opinion's central conclusions rest on incorrect legal premises and that essential questions are either severely condensed or not addressed.

Governance controls

The VDS filed a data protection complaint with the responsible regulatory authority to have an independent entity legally review Netflix's contracts. Netflix stated it is adhering to agreements reached with the BFFS actors' union regarding AI use.
