DoorDash driver banned for faking delivery with AI-generated image
A DoorDash driver in Austin, Texas was permanently banned from the platform after submitting an AI-generated image to falsely mark a delivery as completed. The driver reportedly exploited a feature showing photos from prior deliveries to the same address, and possibly accessed a compromised account through a modified device.
What happened
A DoorDash driver in Austin, Texas accepted a delivery order, immediately marked it as delivered, and submitted an AI-generated image as proof. According to customer Byrne Hobart, the image showed a DoorDash order at his front door, but no driver appeared and no food was present.
Another Austin resident reported experiencing the same issue with the same driver display name. It was speculated the driver account was compromised and accessed through a modified device, potentially using location spoofing and images from DoorDash's stored photos from prior deliveries to the same address.
Reported impact
Byrne Hobart did not receive his food order as promised. After contacting DoorDash support, he was issued a refund and account credit, and a replacement order was dispatched and delivered.
Index analysis
DoorDash's delivery verification system accepted an AI-generated image as proof of delivery, bypassing the normal requirement for drivers to take a live photo at drop-off. The system may have been vulnerable to account compromise and use of modified devices that allowed image submission outside the standard app flow.
Governance controls
DoorDash stated it permanently removed the driver's account and ensured the affected customer was fully compensated. The company said it has zero tolerance for fraud and uses a combination of automated technology and human review to detect and prevent bad actors from abusing the platform.
