Deepfake videos used in cryptocurrency fraud targeting Simcoe County residents
Scammers reportedly used deepfake videos of public figures to trick Simcoe County, Ontario residents into fraudulent cryptocurrency investment schemes, with victims losing tens of thousands of dollars each over recent months.
What happened
Residents of Simcoe County, Ontario were targeted by scammers using deepfake videos to promote fraudulent investment schemes. According to MP Adam Chambers, his office received reports from multiple residents with similar experiences over recent weeks, with at least half a dozen cases identified locally in the past couple of months.
The scam typically begins with ads or videos on social media or news-style websites featuring what appears to be trusted public figures such as politicians, financial commentators, or sports icons endorsing investment opportunities. Victims who click the links are then contacted by scammers posing as legitimate investment firm representatives who guide them through opening accounts and transferring funds to cryptocurrency exchanges like Coinbase or NDAX.
Once victims purchase digital assets like Bitcoin, they transfer the cryptocurrency to addresses provided by the scammers. The scammers sometimes return small amounts framed as 'dividends' or 'initial returns' to build credibility and encourage further investment, after which victims are typically told they need to pay additional fees to access their returns.
Reported impact
Victims have reportedly lost tens of thousands of dollars each, with at least one case involving losses exceeding $100,000. According to MP Chambers, the financial impact has left local victims 'devastated.'
Index analysis
The scams exploit deepfake technology to create convincing video impersonations of public figures endorsing fraudulent investments. Once cryptocurrency is transferred to scammer-controlled addresses, it becomes virtually untraceable, making recovery unlikely.
