What happened
A scammer used an AI-generated deepfake video impersonating actor Owen Wilson to romance a woman, initially meeting her at a Yahtzee game and subsequently contacting her mainly via WhatsApp voice calls and FaceTime.
The scammer posed as Wilson, told the victim he had obtained her a job with Warner Brothers, and sent her sporadic $10 salary payments. The scammer then proposed that the victim and her family move into a house he claimed to have bought so they could serve as caretakers while he worked.
A 10-second video showed a deepfake image of a man resembling Wilson telling the victim 'I'm making this video so you know I'm real' and 'You're an amazing woman', with features including static eye movements and grainy facial texture that suggested computer generation.
