Chinese police bust AI face-swapping ring used for illegal account takeovers
Chinese police arrested four suspects operating an AI face-swapping scheme to bypass identity verification systems and take over social media and business accounts, netting approximately 400,000 yuan in illegal proceeds. The gang used deepfake videos to gain unauthorized control of company accounts and modify legal representative information.
What happened
On June 10, an institution discovered its social media account had been compromised, with posts promoting investment apps and announcements to follow another account, while the password and company legal representative information had been altered.
Wuhan Cyber Police identified that the account takeover was achieved through a mature AI face-swapping technology that bypassed facial recognition systems used in platform verification. Acheng, arrested on July 17, was responsible for performing AI face-swap verification operations, while three associates—Aiming, Aibin, and Aihua—recruited customers seeking 'face-passing' services and transferred personal information for profit.
Police discovered large quantities of AI face-swap video materials at the suspect's residence and found approximately 400,000 yuan in illegal proceeds in his account from the face-swap scheme.
Reported impact
The criminal group altered company legal representative information without victims' knowledge and achieved illegal control of targeted enterprises through compromised accounts.
Governance controls
Police recommended that internet platforms strengthen authentication systems by adopting liveness detection and dynamic verification techniques to prevent static photos or videos from bypassing security checks.
Police advised companies and individuals to enable multi-factor authentication combining passwords, SMS verification codes, and facial recognition to strengthen account login security.
