British Man Convicted of Using AI to Create Child Abuse Images
A 27-year-old British man was convicted and sentenced to 18 years in prison for using AI software to create realistic child sexual abuse images from photographs of real children. The case was the first of its kind in the UK and involved the offender accepting customized orders from other offenders through online chats.
What happened
Hugh Nelson, age 27, a British man, used Daz 3D software with AI capabilities to create child sexual abuse images from ordinary photos of children. Nelson accepted orders for explicit, customized images of children being sexually and physically harmed through online chats, earning approximately £5,000 over 18 months. He was arrested after telling an undercover police officer in an online chat room that he charged £80 to create a new 'character' using images provided by others.
Reported impact
Judge Martin Walsh stated it was 'impossible to know' whether children had been abused as a result of Nelson's images. The judge described the images as so realistic that the distinction between real abuse and AI-generated content could not be determined.
Index analysis
This was the first trial of its kind in the United Kingdom involving the use of AI to create child sexual abuse images. Nelson pleaded guilty to 16 counts of child sexual abuse offences, including creation and distribution of indecent images of children and distribution of pseudo-photographs of children.
