Australian analyst reportedly targeted by scam using AI-generated corporate materials

An Australian fraud analyst reportedly received a cold call and was directed to elaborate AI-generated websites for a fake investment scheme involving a nonexistent mining company. The analyst noted that the sophisticated materials created using artificial intelligence would have been difficult to identify as fraudulent through standard due diligence.

What happened

A fraud and data analyst in Australia received a cold call from someone claiming to be an employee of marketing agency Assent Advisory, promoting an investment opportunity in a mining company.

The caller directed him to elaborate websites for the investment firm and mining company that featured business registration numbers, weekly blog posts, board member profiles with photos and university details, mining site locations, and company policy documents.

The analyst believed the websites and supporting materials were created using artificial intelligence to perpetrate an investment scam.

Reported impact

The analyst reported that the level of detail in the AI-generated materials was convincing enough that he acknowledged basic due diligence might not have been sufficient to identify it as fraudulent if he had trusted the initial contact.

Index analysis

According to Lennon Chang, associate professor of cyber risk and policy at Deakin University, AI is making it easier for criminals to produce convincing scams by enabling anyone to create websites, company policies, images, and fake financial reports.

Dr Chang noted that it is becoming increasingly difficult for the general public to verify whether online content is real or AI-generated, as AI can now generate fake social media engagement such as likes and comments.
