What happened

At least two families in the Peekskill Central School District in northern Westchester County, New York received calls from strangers claiming to have kidnapped a relative and demanding a ransom. The calls used artificial intelligence to mimic the voice of children, making the threats appear more credible.

Reported impact

The realistic nature of the AI-generated voice calls made the threats particularly alarming to parents. Criminals used the scam to attempt to extort money from unsuspecting families.

Index analysis

The scam represents a new variation of virtual kidnapping extortion, which had existed in the past but has become more convincing through the use of generative AI voice cloning technology. The Federal Bureau of Investigation warned in December 2024 that criminals are increasingly leveraging generative AI to enhance the believability of their schemes. Calls were made from outside area codes, could involve multiple phones, and scammers attempted to keep recipients on the phone to prevent them from checking on family members.

Governance controls

On January 8, 2025, the Peekskill Central School District superintendent David Mauricio issued a letter warning parents that at least two families had been contacted as part of a virtual kidnapping extortion call. The letter advised recipients to immediately attempt to contact the family member in question and then contact police once the relative was confirmed to be safe. The superintendent urged parents to check privacy settings on social media accounts, review information published online, check what platforms their children use, and monitor what information children are providing online.
