AI-generated voice used in scam call to defraud elderly woman in Germany
Scammers allegedly used AI-generated voice synthesis to impersonate an 82-year-old woman's daughter during a shock call fraud attempt in Germany, seeking a 45,000 euro bail. The fraud was unsuccessful after family members contacted each other and recognised the deception.
What happened
An 82-year-old woman in Lichtenfels, Oberfranken, Germany received a shock call on Friday afternoon from someone claiming to be a police commissioner who said the woman's daughter had caused a fatal car accident.
According to police, the caller demanded a 45,000 euro bail and played what appeared to be the voice of the woman's daughter confirming the accident and bail demand in the background. The woman's son received a similar call with the same story and reportedly heard his sister's voice in the background.
Police stated the voices of the family members were artificially created using artificial intelligence and played back during the calls. The family members contacted each other, recognised the fraud, and prevented the 82-year-old from paying the money.
Reported impact
The attempted fraud targeted an elderly woman for a payment of 45,000 euros. However, the family's communication prevented financial loss.
