AI-Generated Rental Scams Surge on Booking and Airbnb
Fraudsters are creating AI-generated fake rental listings on Booking and Airbnb that are nearly indistinguishable from genuine listings, with specific seasonal patterns targeting French vacation destinations. The scams exploit generative AI to produce realistic images, profiles, descriptions and messages designed to deceive summer tourists into making payments or sharing banking information.
What happened
Fraudsters are creating fake rental listings on Booking and Airbnb using AI-generated content including images, credible profiles, personalized descriptions, and convincing messages that are difficult to distinguish from genuine listings.
In France, two patterns have emerged: fake luxury villas on the French Riviera appearing between February and May, and fake luxury chalets in the Alps appearing between September and January.
Reported impact
Marnie Wilking, head of cybersecurity at Booking, stated that cybercriminals can generate high-quality realistic content, making fake listings and websites not only credible but sometimes indistinguishable from real ones.
Summer tourists are being targeted, with fraudsters using the scams to obtain direct wire transfers or banking data through unsecured channels outside the platforms.
Index analysis
The surge in AI-generated scams exploits the difficulty consumers face in distinguishing authentic listings from AI-created fakes, particularly when listings use unrealistically low prices or feature inconsistencies that may not be immediately obvious to non-expert users.
Governance controls
Booking and Airbnb recommend users exchange only within the platform's messaging system and report suspicious indicators such as abnormally low tariffs, incoherent descriptions, or recent changes to listing names.
