What happened

Two teenage boys are alleged to have created AI-generated nude images of female students at Lancaster Country Day School in Pennsylvania and shared them on Discord. Investigators uncovered 347 images and videos affecting 60 victims, mostly female students at the private school, with all but one under 18 years old.

Multiple charges including sexual abuse of children and possession of child pornography were filed against the two boys last month.

Reported impact

A 14-year-old student found AI-generated nude pictures of herself circulating among peers last summer. Parents expressed concerns about long-term ramifications, including potential resurface of the images when victims apply to college, start dating, or enter the job market.

Some victims avoided school, had trouble eating, or required medical attention and counseling to cope with the ordeal. Parents inspecting the deepfakes found printed stacks of images estimated at a foot and a half high, with images appearing photorealistic.

Index analysis

A CDT survey of public schools found that 15 percent of students and 11 percent of teachers knew of at least one deepfake depicting an individual associated with their school in a sexually explicit or intimate manner.

Non-consensual AI-generated intimate imagery can lead to harassment, bullying or blackmail, sometimes causing devastating mental health consequences. The FBI issued a warning that such child sexual abuse material, including realistic AI-generated images, is illegal.

Governance controls

The incident is part of a wave of similar cases across US schools from California to New Jersey, highlighting challenges for pupils and educators to keep up with cheap, easily available AI tools that facilitate hyperrealistic deepfakes.

The Center for Democracy & Technology stated that 'the rise of generative AI has collided with a long-standing problem in schools: the act of sharing non-consensual intimate imagery,' and that 'in the digital age, kids desperately need support to navigate tech-enabled harassment.'
