What happened

Multiple fake social media profiles appeared on Facebook and Instagram using Nahir Galarza's name and image. Many profiles displayed AI-generated or manipulated photographs showing Galarza in provocative poses, reading books, or with motivational phrases, along with some older real photos from more than seven years ago.

Some fake accounts attempted to solicit money by requesting transfers to specified accounts, claiming the funds were for Galarza. One viral image showed Galarza with an iPhone, accompanied by text stating the device was purchased using money donated through such accounts.

Reported impact

Galarza's real Facebook profile, which she created before her detention in 2017, has received messages of various kinds since then. Her associates clarified that Galarza does not request money transfers, conduct fundraising efforts directly or indirectly, and does not manage social media accounts or have access to personal mobile devices as per her prison regime.

Index analysis

The use of AI-generated and manipulated images to create false identities exploiting a high-profile public name demonstrates how synthetic media technology can facilitate fraud and misinformation. The multiple fake accounts with varying content show a pattern of deliberate impersonation designed to deceive users into believing they were communicating with Galarza.
