AI-generated fake IDs used to rent e-bikes in Italy
Two foreign nationals used AI-generated fake identity documents to rent three high-value e-bikes in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy in early September 2026, then left the country without returning them. Italian police traced the suspects through surveillance footage and hotel records, and they were reported to prosecutors for fraud.
What happened
A man and a woman, both foreign nationals, presented themselves at an e-bike rental shop in Val Rendena in Madonna di Campiglio in early September 2026. They rented three high-end e-bikes with a combined commercial value exceeding β¬15,000, providing foreign identity documents to complete the rental contract which stipulated a two-day return period.
The suspects did not return the three e-bikes when due and left no trace. The rental shop owner contacted the carabinieri. Investigation revealed the identity documents used to sign the rental contract were false and had been created using advanced AI software.
Reported impact
The three high-value e-bikes, worth over β¬15,000 in total, were not recovered. The suspects had already left Italy on the day the e-bikes were due to be returned.
Index analysis
Carabinieri from Madonna di Campiglio and Polizia Locale di Pinzolo analysed surveillance footage from the area and identified the SUV used by the suspects. The vehicle's foreign registration plate was deliberately concealed by a roof rack. Officers reconstructed the full registration number from the footage.
Following the vehicle's movements, investigators located the hotel where the couple had stayed in Pinzolo, enabling them to establish the suspects' true identities.
