AI-Generated Deepfake Videos Used in Swedish Fraud Targeting Doctors Wold and Tegnell
Swedish scammers created AI-generated deepfake videos impersonating well-known doctors Agnes Wold and Anders Tegnell to promote fake health products on social media. Victims were directed to fraudulent websites where their credit card information was stolen and unauthorized charges made.
What happened
Since late May 2025, Stockholm police received multiple reports of fraud involving AI-generated videos impersonating doctors Agnes Wold and Anders Tegnell on social media. The deepfake videos showed the doctors recommending various medications, vitamins and health products, with the videos embedded in social media advertisements.
Victims were directed via links to fraudulent websites where they were deceived into entering their credit card details. Once on these sites, victims' card information was stolen and significantly higher amounts than advertised were withdrawn from their accounts.
Reported impact
Dozens of people reported being defrauded through the scam campaign. Victims who had not blocked their cards suffered larger unauthorized charges and theft of their credit card information.
The impersonation created false health expectations among vulnerable people with serious health conditions, according to the named doctors. One doctor noted particular concern for elderly people with blood vessel problems who were deceived.
Index analysis
AI-generated video technology was used to convincingly replicate both the appearance and voice of well-known public figures. Police stated this was the first time they had observed criminals using AI-generated video deepfakes in Swedish fraud campaigns.
Governance controls
Police investigation into the frauds was closed because the crimes were suspected to have been committed abroad. Police issued public warnings about the new fraud method and distributed advice to citizens on source-checking social media advertisements and protecting card information.
