General-Purpose AI Code of Practice

European Union Β· Framework Β· European Commission and AI Board

Our summary

A voluntary multi-stakeholder code of practice designed to help providers of general-purpose AI models meet compliance obligations under the AI Act regarding safety, transparency and copyright. The European Commission and AI Board have endorsed it as an adequate tool for demonstrating compliance. Organizations that sign the code can reduce administrative burden and gain legal certainty in meeting their regulatory requirements.

Inside this policy

Every section of this policy in order. Our notes summarise each one in plain language and do not quote the official text, which is the authority.

The 3 chapters of the code

The code comprises three separately authored chapters on transparency, copyright, and safety and security. Providers of general-purpose AI models can use the transparency and copyright chapters to demonstrate compliance with Article 53 of the AI Act, while only providers of the most advanced models subject to Article 55 obligations must address the safety and security chapter.

Signatories of the code of practice

Various AI companies and service providers have signed the code of practice, with most committing to all three chapters and one provider committing only to the safety and security chapter while using alternative means for transparency and copyright compliance.
