A Waymo autonomous vehicle reportedly struck and killed KitKat, a beloved cat living at a San Francisco bodega, on October 27. According to witnesses, the vehicle swerved and did not attempt to stop, prompting community mourning and concern about the safety of autonomous vehicles.
Late Monday night, October 27, a Waymo autonomous vehicle struck KitKat, a cat that lived at Randa's Market on 16th Street in San Francisco's Mission District. According to witnesses, the Waymo swerved, and the cat was struck around 11:40 p.m.
A 311 complaint filed after the incident stated the vehicle "hit the liquor store's cat that was sitting on the sidewalk next to the transit lane" and "did not even try to stop."
Reported impact
KitKat, who had been a fixture at Randa's Market for nine years, was killed in the incident. The cat had been known as "the Mayor of 16th Street" and was beloved by the neighborhood community.
The Mission District community responded with a memorial featuring flowers, candles, and messages at the market location. Store owner Mike Zeidan said KitKat brightened customers' days for nearly a decade.
