US politicians share AI-generated image of rescued airman in Iran

Republican politicians including Greg Abbott, Ken Paxton, and Mike Lawler shared an AI-generated image on X claiming to show a US airman rescued from Iran, which accumulated millions of views before being flagged as fake. The incident demonstrated how synthetic media can spread rapidly through political figures on social platforms during breaking news events.

What happened

A pro-Trump X account posted an AI-generated image purporting to show a US airman rescued from Iran on Sunday during an Easter weekend mission. The image depicted a man in military uniform smiling and clutching an American flag surrounded by fellow troops.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and New York Representative Mike Lawler each shared the image on X. Abbott posted 'This is so awesome' with a caption about God sending a message to enemies, while Lawler wrote 'God Bless America!' and Paxton added 'Shot down on Good Friday… rescued on Easter morning. God is sending a message to our enemies!' The image accumulated over 5 million views and was reshared more than 21,000 times before X users added a community note indicating it was probably AI-generated.

Reported impact

Multiple detection tools confirmed with high certainty that the image was not real. The fake image spread widely on social media, contributing to misinformation about the rescue operation during a real military event.

Index analysis

NewsGuard's misinformation editor Sofia Rubinson noted that AI-generated fabrications are increasingly being used to fill gaps in real-time reporting, representing 'another tactic in the misinformation wars.' Billy Binion of Reason magazine called the incident 'bleak' and said there is a desperate need for 'a new crash course in media literacy.'

Governance controls

X users applied a community note to the image warning it was probably AI-generated. All three Republican officials deleted their posts after the error was identified.
