US Congressman shares AI-generated image of Brazilian President facing detention
A US congressman used AI to generate an image depicting Brazil's president in the same pose as the Venezuelan president after his arrest by US forces, posted with text implying similar action might await Brazil's leader. Brazilian social media users responded with mass criticism.
What happened
US Representative Carlos Antonio Giménez, a Republican from Florida's 28th district, shared an AI-generated image on X on August 8, 2026, depicting Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in a pose identical to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro following Maduro's capture by US forces on January 3, 2026.
The image showed Lula with his face digitally inserted in place of Maduro's, depicted blindfolded and with bound hands. Giménez captioned the post 'O que o espera...' ('What awaits him...').
The post was subsequently shared by Eduardo Bolsonaro, former Brazilian congressman and son of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, who added commentary framing it as criticism of the Workers' Party (PT).
Reported impact
Brazilian social media users responded with thousands of comments opposing and mocking the congressman, in an event referred to as a 'vampetaço' (mass trolling campaign).
Users highlighted that Lula was elected with 60.3 million votes, proportionally more than Trump; the Brazilian government's approval rating was 48%, 13 points higher than Trump's 35%; and Lula led re-election polls.
Index analysis
The image synthesized Lula's facial features onto an existing photograph of Maduro's detention, creating a false depiction suggesting similar treatment might await the Brazilian president.
The post appeared to reference the 2026 military operation that resulted in Maduro's capture and transfer to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he and his wife Cilia Flores face charges including narcoterrorism and drug conspiracy.
