Ukrainian Military Deploys AI-Guided Drones for Enhanced Battlefield Strikes

Ukraine's military has deployed the TFL-1 AI system on FPV drones to autonomously guide strikes on targets in areas where radio contact cannot be maintained. The system enables the drone to track and engage targets in the final 500 meters of flight, improving strike accuracy on military vehicles while operating in terrain-obscured or electronically-jammed zones.

What happened

Since summer 2025, Ukraine's military has deployed TFL-1, an AI system developed by the startup The Fourth Law, which enables FPV drones to autonomously navigate and track targets over the final 500 meters of flight.

The system addresses a critical operational challenge: maintaining radio contact with drones in areas obscured by terrain or enemy electronic warfare. Once an operator acquires a target, the embedded AI independently guides the drone to engage even when video, telemetry, and control signals are lost.

Reported impact

A drone operator with Military Intelligence (ГУР) reported that all 10 TFL-1 strikes achieved direct hits on targets. The 412th Autonomous Brigade of Unmanned Systems conducted approximately 1,000 FPV attacks monthly and achieved a 50 percent mission success rate using the system.

The system costs between 50 to 100 dollars, representing less than 10 percent of a full loitering munition's cost. Engineers note the AI currently performs well against military vehicles but struggles to track human figures without improved optics.

Index analysis

The TFL-1 developer, programmer Yaroslav Azhnyuk, founded The Fourth Law in 2023 and describes this as the first level in a planned five-module lineup intended to eventually provide drones with full autonomous navigation and target selection.

Military personnel initially expressed skepticism about AI-guided systems after testing dozens of commercially available autonomous targeting solutions with poor results before adopting TFL-1.

Governance controls

Budget constraints remain the primary limitation on wider deployment of AI-equipped drones across Ukrainian forces.
