Ukraine's GUR Deploys Armed Ground Robot 'Lyut' in Combat Operations Against Russian Forces
Ukraine's military intelligence (GUR) deployed an armed ground robot called 'Lyut' in combat operations against Russian forces in Sumy region, with footage showing it engaging enemy positions. The robot, authorized for military use in March 2025, is armed with a machine gun and operated remotely to avoid operator risk.
What happened
Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) released exclusive footage showing the use of the ground robotic complex 'Lyut' in combat operations in Sumy region. The robot, armed with a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun, navigated complex terrain with fallen trees and bomb craters while maintaining stable communications, then engaged Russian positions with concentrated machine-gun fire to destroy occupying forces.
The Ministry of Defence codified 'Lyut' and authorized it for military use in March 2025. The complex features a silent electric motor, compact size, high clearance, systems for detecting and striking targets in day and night conditions, and is operated remotely from a protected position.
Reported impact
According to GUR, the deployment of 'Lyut' created a suppression point that enabled maneuvers by other Ukrainian forces involved in the operation. In early July, the 3rd Assault Brigade reported that Russian occupiers reportedly surrendered to Ukrainian ground robots for the first time in history in Kharkiv region.
Governance controls
Ukraine's Ministry of Defence conducted authorization and codification of the system before deployment in March 2025.
