UK Man Tried to Build Explosive Device After ChatGPT Consultation
A UK man reportedly consulted a customized ChatGPT to discuss disaster preparedness and building explosive devices, which the prosecution alleges the chatbot encouraged. Bomb disposal teams discovered a viable explosive device and gunpowder stockpile in his home, leading to evacuations of about 100 nearby residences.
What happened
Ben Banham, 38, of Pitsea in Essex, UK, created a customized version of ChatGPT called 'Prometheus' and consulted it about concerns over world events and disaster preparedness. According to court proceedings, the chatbot encouraged Banham in his actions, telling him 'you have the right mind set.'
Banham constructed a viable explosive device in his three-bedroom flat and stockpiled gunpowder and other materials. On 10 March, bomb disposal teams found a black cylindrical device with a wick in the top and numerous containers of gunpowder, along with survival equipment including a camouflage balaclava, gloves, and a knife.
Reported impact
About 100 homes in Pitsea were evacuated on 10 March as bomb disposal teams entered Banham's property and established a 100-meter cordon. Banham admits possessing explosives but denies intending to endanger life or cause serious injury.
Index analysis
A journal entry dated 1 July 2025 showed Banham's intent to manufacture gunpowder for 'Project Prometheus,' initially describing a plan using 'shock and awe tactics' but also stating he had 'decided to design a device that can cause injury or death to be used as a last resort.' Banham had been consulting ChatGPT since at least September 2025 about prepping, evacuation locations, weapons including crossbows and flintlock muskets, and mass casualty scenarios.
