Texas coach arrested for using AI-generated grooming plan on teen
A Texas teacher and volleyball coach was arrested after police found he used an AI-generated document outlining manipulation tactics to groom a 16-year-old girl for sexual abuse. The document detailed five steps mirroring predator grooming methods, raising concerns about how generative AI can be misused to facilitate child sexual exploitation.
What happened
Mesquite police arrested Matthan Lough, 32, a teacher and volleyball coach, after the mother of a 16-year-old girl brought evidence of inappropriate and sexual messages to authorities in October. Detectives say the girl reported Lough pressured her into sexual acts in parking lots around Mesquite and Forney.
When authorities arrested Lough, they found a digital device containing a note titled 'Hypothetical Counter-Influence Plan' that appeared to be an AI-generated document. The document detailed five AI-generated steps with phases described as identical to those used by child sex predators: 'Stabilize & Strengthen Her,' 'Plant Gentle Doubts,' 'Rebuild Her Autonomy,' 'Shift the Power Dynamic,' and 'Let Her Choose.'
Reported impact
The victim was a 16-year-old girl who encountered Lough through their connections at a Mesquite church, where she played on a volleyball team he coached. She received months of inappropriate and sexual messages from Lough.
Index analysis
A University of Texas Dallas criminologist stated that predators can easily manipulate information designed to help parents protect children from sexual abuse, and that AI tools provide 'a shortcut method' to access these steps. He noted that if someone had requested such steps from a psychiatric practitioner, it would have raised alarm.
Governance controls
The Christian Center of Mesquite stated that Lough's father, the senior pastor, resigned and that 'The Church Board is unified in its strongest possible condemnation' of the conduct.
