What happened
A Tesla Cybertruck operating in Full Self-Driving mode version 13.2.4 crashed head-first into a light pole near Stead Boulevard in Reno, Nevada, after the system failed to merge out of an ending lane.
The vehicle did not slow down or attempt to turn when the lane ended and instead drove onto a curb island where a pedestrian crossing was located, striking both the curb and the light pole.
Reported impact
The Cybertruck was totaled in the crash, but the driver, software developer Jonathan Challinger, walked away without injury and reported suffering no scratches.
Index analysis
Challinger acknowledged complacency on his part, stating he was not paying attention while the vehicle was in autonomous mode and that the crash was a 'big fail' on his part.
The incident occurred on an empty road at night on a road with lane markings and arrows indicating the lane would end well ahead of the pole and curb, though the pole's placement on the curb was described as awkward.
