Taiwanese photographer prosecuted for AI deepfake sexual images of female musicians
A Taiwanese photographer was prosecuted for using AI face-swapping technology to create synthetic sexual images of at least five female musicians without consent and distributing them online with a co-conspirator. One victim reported experiencing four years of ongoing harassment tied to the incident, and the case prompted public condemnation of digital sexual violence in Taiwan's music community.
What happened
A 27-year-old Taiwanese photographer with over five years of experience photographing musicians created an adult account called '意淫樂手' (roughly translated as sexually harassing musicians) starting in 2022, which posted over 30 illegal sexual images. Between January and March 2024, he extracted photographs of multiple female musicians and used AI face-swapping technology to create synthetic sexual videos and images, then sent them to a co-conspirator surnamed Lin.
The co-conspirator received the synthetic images and posted them publicly on X (formerly Twitter) in April 2024. At least five female musicians discovered they had been depicted in synthesized explicit content distributed online and reported the case to Taipei City Police Department's women and children squad, leading to investigation by Shilin District Prosecutors' Office.
Reported impact
A victim revealed that she had experienced harassment for four years, with the offender using her photographs to create deepfake nude images and solicit collective online harassment of her. She stated the offender 'even used photos of me from when I was in a girl group to masturbate to and send me the videos.'
After the case became public, multiple female musicians condemned digital sexual violence. A bassist from the Grammy-winning band 'Elephant Gym' posted on Facebook stating that before this incident she had no awareness that female musicians could experience such treatment, but recognized it could happen to any female musician.
