Student dies by suicide after friend creates AI deepfakes for blackmail
A 19-year-old student in Faridabad died by suicide after being blackmailed by his friend using AI-generated deepfake images and videos of himself and his sisters. Police registered a case and are investigating the friend involved in creating and using the synthetic media for extortion.
What happened
Rahul Bharti, a 19-year-old second-year BCom student at DAV College in NIT Faridabad, died by suicide on Sunday, October 27, 2025, after consuming sulphas tablets. His friend Sahil had created AI-generated obscene photos and videos of Rahul and his three sisters and used them to extort money from him.
Rahul's father alleged that someone had hacked Rahul's phone about two weeks before his death and used artificial intelligence to create the fake nude images and videos. In a chat conversation found on Rahul's phone, Sahil sent the AI-generated content and demanded money, threatening to make the photos and videos viral on social media if payment was not made.
Reported impact
Rahul had been distressed for approximately 15 days before his death, not eating properly and staying mostly in his room. His death occurred early Sunday morning while he was being treated in hospital after consuming the tablets on Saturday.
Governance controls
A case under Section 108 (abetment to suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered at Old Faridabad police station. Sahil is being questioned by police.
