Shield AI's Hivemind enables autonomous military drone and vessel operations in Taiwan
Taiwan's National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology demonstrated autonomous military operations using Shield AI's Hivemind software on both attack drones and unmanned surface vessels, with the AI pilots coordinating multi-platform operations in contested environments without human intervention.
What happened
On 29 July 2026, two Taiwanese unmanned surface vessels (SeaShark 600 and SeaShark 800) operated by Thunder Tiger Corporation, running Shield AI's Hivemind autonomy software, detected a target crewed vessel and escorted it out of a designated search area at Dapeng Bay in Pingtung County without human intervention. Hivemind divided the search area into two sectors, assigned one vessel to each, and coordinated an optimized intercept route when the first USV made the detection.
Weeks earlier, Shield AI and Taiwan's National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology demonstrated AI-piloted attack drones (Mighty Hornet III) executing a coordinated wide-area search operation while respecting a designated no-fly zone, all under autonomous control. Each AI-piloted UAV was assigned a search area, maintained communications with other platforms, and one drone operated around a partial no-fly zone within its search sector.
Reported impact
Institute president Li Shih-chiang stated that the integration of Hivemind on attack drones demonstrated high performance and enabled Taiwanese engineers to independently operate and employ the technology within three months.
Shield AI president Brandon Tseng stated that autonomy enables effective leverage of drones on the battlefield and that Hivemind's multi-agent teaming capability is becoming one of the most important force multipliers in modern defense.
Index analysis
The demonstrations represent the first integration of Hivemind maritime radar and AIS data into the software, which had previously flown or sailed on more than thirty platforms. Software integration of Hivemind onto the SeaShark vessels was completed in roughly six weeks from the partnership agreement in May 2026.
Hivemind is designed to operate in contested battlespaces featuring GPS and communications jamming, allowing autonomous execution of operations and coordinated multi-agent teaming without wireless links to human operators.
Governance controls
Taiwan's National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology partnered with Shield AI under a February 2026 contract covering Hivemind software development kit for indigenous Taiwanese platforms. Personnel from Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration attended the USV demonstration.
