Rapper Sexyy Red posted AI-generated images on X on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. One image depicted her clasping hands intimately with the late civil rights leader in what appeared to be a nightclub setting; another showed her photoshopped into a scene from the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs & Freedom.
Reported impact
Bernice King, the civil rights leader's daughter and CEO of the King Center, criticized the images as "intentionally distasteful, dishonoring, deplorable, and disrespectful" to her family and her father's legacy. She stated that King's image is regularly misused "with no regard to his family, his sacrificial work, or to the tragic, unjust way in which he died (a state-sanctioned assassination)."
Sexyy Red removed the images and apologized, stating she had reposted something she thought was innocent and had never meant to disrespect King's family. Bernice King subsequently accepted the apology and acknowledged that it was not her intention to denigrate the rapper.
