Palantir Maven AI system supports US military bombing campaign in Iran, strikes school
Palantir Technologies deployed its Maven AI system to support U.S. military bombing operations against Iran beginning February 28, 2026, generating over 1,000 strike recommendations in the first day. A girls' school in Minab, Iran was struck, reportedly killing at least 165 people; analysts warned the system's speed left insufficient time to verify targets and reduced human ability to catch AI errors before irreversible harm occurred.
What happened
Palantir Technologies' Maven Smart System, powered by Anthropic's Claude AI platform, analyzed satellite imagery, drone video, intercepted enemy communications and over 150 other data sources to produce more than 1,000 strike recommendations for the U.S. military on the first day of bombing operations against Iran on February 28, 2026.
The Maven system identified, tracked and classified vehicles, weapons and buildings, reducing target identification time from hours to under one minute. The system provided precise coordinates and ranked targets by importance to support strikes on approximately 1,000 targets within 24 hours.
Minab Girls School in southern Iran was struck during the campaign, reportedly resulting in at least 165 deaths.
Reported impact
Analysts warned that Maven-class tools left almost no time for effective verification of output results, increasing the risk of striking wrong targets. If AI judgement failed, humans in the decision-making process might lack time or sufficient information to detect errors before irreversible consequences occurred.
Index analysis
The Maven system was used operationally during what was reportedly the first large-scale instance of AI providing real-time support to military action decisions. The system replaced analysis work that previously required human analysts several days to complete, condensing it to minutes.
Governance controls
Palantir's UK and European regional director Louis Mosley stated that responsibility for how analysis results are used remains with the military, and that humans always participate in the decision-making process with final authority remaining with humans.
