OAB Rondônia suspends lawyer for alleged prompt injection in judicial AI
Brazil's bar association suspended a lawyer in Rondônia on allegations of embedding hidden prompt injection commands in a court petition to manipulate judicial AI systems analyzing the case. The court detected the commands, prompting a suspension and ethics investigation.
What happened
The OAB Rondônia (Brazilian Bar Association regional section) suspended a lawyer on 1 June 2026 after discovering hidden commands in a judicial petition filed in a case involving health insurance coverage for bariatric surgery.
The lawyer allegedly inserted hidden prompt injection commands that instructed an AI system to not classify the surgery as aesthetic and to recognize the case as an emergency. The Tribunal de Justiça de Rondônia detected the commands during review of the petition.
Reported impact
The prompt injection commands were designed to manipulate the AI system's decision-making in the judicial process. The OAB-RO president Márcio Nogueira stated the issue concerns 'the allegation of utilization of hidden mechanisms intended to interfere in the environment of judicial decision formation.'
Index analysis
The incident reveals vulnerability in judicial AI systems to prompt injection techniques. The OAB-RO noted that guidelines from the Conselho Nacional de Justiça (CNJ resolution 332/2020), the Estratégia Nacional do Ministério Público Digital, and OAB recommendations have not been sufficient to prevent such misuse.
Governance controls
The OAB-RO opened an ethical-disciplinary investigation alongside the suspension. The suspension is temporary (initially 30 days) and will be submitted for approval by the OAB Rondônia Seccional Council, which will decide whether to maintain or lift the measure.
The OAB-RO emphasized that the suspension is a precautionary measure not constituting a conviction or anticipated punishment, with guarantees of the right to defense, contradiction, and due process.
