What happened

A network of at least six false Facebook pages, reportedly administered by bots and registered to the same addresses in London, began distributing AI-generated images and misinformation across Romania. The pages, including 'România Frumoasă', 'Părinți și Bunici', 'Sunt gospodină', and 'Angela', frequently changed their identities and targeted different audiences with emotional content.

The pages distributed links to untracked websites containing disinformation that posed security risks to user devices and data. Posts were directed into Facebook groups dedicated to teachers and education staff, spreading content promoting communist nostalgia, ultranationalism, and idealized traditions alongside false images purporting to show rural life or family moments.

Reported impact

The network facilitated political manipulation, particularly during Romania's presidential election campaign, when some pages shifted focus to support independent candidate Călin Georgescu. Users were encouraged to engage through likes and comments to increase page visibility, spreading emotionally manipulative messaging to large audiences.

Index analysis

Analysis by Edupedu.ro identified the network as part of broader digital manipulation following revelations that the Chinese network TikTok had influenced Romanian presidential elections through algorithmic manipulation. The coordinated distribution of AI-generated content combined with propaganda in education sector groups raised concerns about the scale of foreign digital interference.
