Multiple AI chatbots cite Grokipedia, raising misinformation concerns
Multiple AI chatbots including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity are increasingly citing Grokipedia, Elon Musk's AI-generated Wikipedia alternative, as a source in their responses. The citations have been rising since mid-November 2025, though Grokipedia remains a minor source compared to Wikipedia, and experts warn that the platform's reliance on automated generation with limited human oversight makes it prone to errors and misinformation.
What happened
ChatGPT, Google Gemini, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity are citing Grokipedia, Elon Musk's AI-generated encyclopedia launched in late October 2025, in their responses.
According to Ahrefs analysis, Grokipedia appeared in more than 263,000 ChatGPT responses out of 13.6 million prompts tested, compared to 2.9 million responses citing Wikipedia. Data from Profound showed Grokipedia accounts for roughly 0.01 to 0.02% of daily ChatGPT citations, a share that has steadily increased since mid-November.
Semrush found a similar spike in Grokipedia citations across Google's AI products in December. Grokipedia citations appear most frequently in ChatGPT, followed by smaller numbers in Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews, and Perplexity.
Reported impact
Unlike Wikipedia, Grokipedia is generated and edited by xAI's chatbot Grok with limited human oversight. Experts have cautioned that this makes it prone to errors, biases, and data tampering.
Trinity College Dublin Chair of Technology and Society Taha Yasseri said that fluency is easily confused with reliability. An OpenAI spokesperson stated that ChatGPT utilises a variety of sources that are all accessible to the public and includes citations to make users aware of their reliability.
