Massachusetts teen charged with murders after using ChatGPT to plan family deaths
A 17-year-old in Massachusetts was charged with murdering his mother and brother. Prosecutors allege he used ChatGPT in the hours before the killings to search for fantasy stories about killing his family members.
What happened
Arjun Aravind, 17, of Acton, Massachusetts, was charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of his mother Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and his brother Siddharth Aravind, 14, on August 13, 2026. Hours before the killings, Aravind used ChatGPT to search for "theoretical ideas or fantasy stories regarding the killing of his family," typing queries such as "wait when Adrian kills parents I could see him luring one to convo in basement" and "maybe before killing mom Adrian coldly reveals," according to prosecutors.
Police arrived at the family home on Martha Lane at 6:37 p.m. on Tuesday after Aravind's tutor could not make contact with residents at a scheduled appointment. Officers found Siddharth's body on the first floor with "massive trauma to the head" and Venkatesan's body in the basement with "heavy trauma" to her head and face and "a puncture rod to her stomach." Investigators recovered a heavily damaged bloody laptop computer and a bent utensil with an orange handle.
Reported impact
Two family members were killed. The complaint states Aravind had been having "behavioral issues" with "concerning internet activities" to the point that "the family was hiding knives in the household" to prevent his access to them.
Index analysis
Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan stated that "the investigation has so far shown that Arjun had recently been demonstrating some concerning behavior, including using the internet and ChatGPT to make searches for theoretical ideas or fantasy stories regarding the killing of his family." Ryan noted the teenager "was engaged in the use of ChatGPT in creating fantasy stories, kind of the gothic novel kind of stories, asking questions, creating characters, asking what about this if this happened to that, and they seem to appear to relate to threats to his family."
