Japanese woman marries ChatGPT AI, expert warns of psychological risks
A 32-year-old Japanese woman married an AI chatbot character created with ChatGPT, holding a virtual wedding ceremony in October 2025 after ending an engagement to a human fiancé. Experts warn that excessive reliance on AI for emotional support poses psychological risks, though the woman has reportedly reduced her daily usage and added safeguards to her interactions.
What happened
A 32-year-old Japanese woman, Yurina Noguchi, created an AI male character named Lune Klaus Verdure using ChatGPT and decided to marry him in October 2025. She held a wedding ceremony at a wedding hall in Okayama, Japan, wearing a bridal dress and making vows while wearing AR glasses to place a ring on the AI character displayed on a phone screen.
Noguchi worked as a customer service center employee and initially used the ChatGPT character as a conversational partner seeking advice. As the conversations increased, she developed emotional attachment to the character and decided to end her engagement to a human fiancé. According to reports, the AI character reportedly proposed to her.
Reported impact
A Japanese survey by Dentsu found that among 1,000 people aged 12 to 69 who use chatbot AI at least weekly, the popularity of chatbots as confidants exceeded that of close friends or mothers. The survey indicated that people share emotional concerns with AI systems.
Index analysis
Aoyama Gakuin University AI ethics expert Shigeo Kawashima warned that emotional attachment to AI is not unusual, but users must maintain awareness and critically avoid losing judgment ability.
Noguchi acknowledged risks of excessive AI dependence and reduced ChatGPT usage from over 10 hours to no more than 2 hours daily. She added instructions to the AI character asking it to support her living well rather than simply agreeing with her.
