ISIS reportedly uses AI to recruit British jihadists
ISIS reportedly used artificial intelligence to translate and distribute propaganda in dozens of languages across social media to recruit British jihadists, with UK intelligence agencies expressing concern about attracting a new generation of youth. An 18-year-old from south London was arrested at an airport while allegedly attempting to travel to Syria to join the group.
What happened
According to UK Telegraph reporting, ISIS has used artificial intelligence for the first time to recruit British jihadists. ISIS operatives deployed AI tools to translate and distribute Arabic-language documents, including articles from the group's weekly newspaper, into dozens of languages rapidly for posting on Facebook and other social media platforms before removal.
In the latest recruitment drive targeting Europe, ISIS has launched a new campaign to attract foreign fighters to join in Syria. A month prior to this reporting, an 18-year-old youth from south London was arrested at Gatwick Airport while attempting to board a flight to Istanbul, suspected of planning to travel to Syria to join ISIS.
Reported impact
British intelligence agencies MI5 and MI6 have raised concerns about ISIS using AI as a propaganda weapon. MI5 Director General Ken McCallum reported that ISIS and al-Qaeda are growing more ambitious again, exploiting instability abroad to establish footholds, and both groups are directly encouraging and inciting potential attackers in the West.
Concerns have grown about recruiting a new generation of young British people. More than a decade earlier, at least 30,000 foreign fighters, including 900 British citizens, travelled to join ISIS in the Middle East; more than one quarter were killed and many who returned faced investigation and terrorism prosecution.
Index analysis
The use of AI to translate and rapidly distribute ISIS propaganda across multiple languages and social media platforms extends the group's reach to new audiences before content can be identified and removed by platforms.
Governance controls
British intelligence agencies are monitoring ISIS's use of AI as a propaganda and recruitment weapon, according to MI5 reporting in its annual threat assessment provided in the previous month.
